Good news for teachers as the Government has recently announced that starting salaries are due to increase ahead of the next school year.
The news comes as the Department for Education try to battle the stream of teachers leaving the profession. Education Secretary Gavin Williamson announced that starting salaries would rise to £26,000 per annum. They aim to increase this to £30,000 by September 2022. Salaries for those in outer London would rise to £30,000, and £32,000 for those in inner London.
These starting salary increases will be matched by pay increases of 2.5% for senior teachers and leaders.
Battling Teachers Leaving
These announcement comes as part of the Government’s strategy to attract and retain the most talented graduates as teachers.
Whilst more needs to be done to battle teacher workload - one of the main drivers of talent leaving the profession – increases to pay will help keep some teachers in the trade. The Government hopes the pay rises will help retain an extra 1,000 teachers per year.
These come as part of a three-year plan to increase school spending by £7.1bn by 2022-23.
