What skills do you need to become a Key Worker?

With no end to the government coronavirus lockdown, these are tough times for many people needing to find new work.

Yet there are opportunities being created for ‘Key Worker’ roles. A Key Worker is defined as being a worker whose role is essential to public health and safety. If their job were not carried out, the basic skeleton of society would not function.

Out of work?

Latest government figures show that due to Covid 19, more than 4 millionworkers have been furloughed, with a further 1.2 million being made  unemployed since the outbreaky. If you are one of these people, don’t despair, you’re not alone!

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (or furloughing) mandates that the Government will cover 80% of worker’s wages, in a bid to prevent nationwide job losses on an unprecedented level. While this means you cannot do any work for your primary company, most business are allowing employees to take on a second role to top up their loss of earnings.

How to become a Key Worker?

Any skills you do currently have are easily transferable, for instance if you already have a driver’s license you are well on your way to becoming a delivery driver. Used to work in a call centre? Perhaps you can be an administrator. You may have come from an office-based sector and want to try your hand at something totally different, so parcel sorter or warehouse operative may keep you busy, as well as fit! Or if you worked in hospitality you may have excellent customer service skills, very useful on the frontline in the Covid-19 test centres.
